Cybersecurity Attack Trends in 2023 - Elevated Phishing Using AI & Machine Learning

This month we’ve been starting down the path to a more secure new year with tips about 2023 cyberattack trends. This last week of January, we’re focusing on phishing attempts that use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning.

AI is the capability of a computer system to mimic human cognitive functions such as learning and problem-solving. Machine Learning is a subset of AI that solves specific tasks by analyzing data and making predictions from that data. In 2023, most Information Technology (IT) products and teams use AI and Machine Learning to improve IT functions. They are not the only ones though.

Cybercriminals are elevating their phishing attempts by using AI and machine learning. The days of easy-to-spot phishing emails with spelling and grammar mistakes are short. Not only do AI/ML phishing emails look identical to a real brand’s emails, but they will also become personalized. Hackers use these tactics to capture more victims. AI/ML now also allows hackers to send out more targeted phishing messages in less time than in years past.

We hope you have a happy, secure New Year! If you need assistance with your cyber needs or just have questions, contact the DIG.
