DIG this week's security tip

CYBER CRIMINALS ATTACK DURING CRISES

Cyber criminals know that one of the best ways to rush people into making a mistake is by creating a heightened sense of urgency. One of the easiest ways to create a sense of urgency is to take advantage of a crisis. They view traumatic events, such as the breakout of a war, a major natural disaster such as a volcanic explosion, or infectious disease breakout, as opportunities. Once the event becomes the focus of news stories and social media, they strike.

Through timely phishing emails and scams about the event they launch scams to millions of people around the world. To better protect yourself from scams during a traumatic event or disaster;

  • Be vigilant of phishing attempts that claim to have information about the crisis or ask for donations.

  • Be aware of social engineering tactics that attempt to trick people into giving away personal information or money.

  • Be wary of unsolicited phone calls or text messages asking for personal information or donations.

  • Stay informed by following trusted sources of information such as government agencies or reputable news outlets.

By taking these steps, you can better protect yourself from cyber criminals who seek to exploit a crisis or disaster.
