Weekly Security Tip #243: Ransomware Just Got a Whole Lot Worse!

Most people are aware of ransomware and what it involves: encrypting your data and then possibly providing the encryption key if the ransom is paid. The next generation of ransomware included the theft of your data, known as data exfiltration.

Would you be surprised to know that ransomware has gotten worse, much worse? Cyber criminals have stepped up their game:

  • They not only extort money for the initial ransomware attack but then extort more money so that the stolen data is not exposed to the public.

  • They steal every credential they can find from your business, employees, your personal life and your customers.

  • They will threaten you, your employees and your customers.

  • They will use the stolen data to run spear phishing attacks on your employees and customers.

  • And they will publicly shame their victims by exposing embarrassing information to the world.

So, what can you do to protect your business, staff and clients? We highly recommend that you contact the Digital Investigative Group (the DIG). They are a Montana based team of certified cyber security professionals that can assess and advise how you can best protect your business, your staff and yourself from cybercriminals.
